Visuals
After Bond performs his famous ski jump, he deploys his Union Jack parachute which leads seamlessly into the title sequence. A pair of female silhouette hands catches the parachute, which then disappears. A number of female forms bounce across the screen in slow motion, along with Bond himself, before for the first time in the series, Roger Moore appears as Bond.
Bond then seemingly meets a Russian agent under the banner of the Union Jack, before disappearing of the screen. Numerous naked female silhouettes then run, dance and cartwheel across the screen, including standing and acrobating around some gun barrels. The silhouette of Bond and the agent return a number of times, before the sequence ends revealing General Gogol standing in his office.
Theme
After the disappointment with the title theme in The Man With The Golden Gun, and with John Barry unavailable, Marvin Hamlisch steps in as composer to create another classic Bond theme. The 'James Bond Theme' » aside, The Spy Who Loved Me marked the first time in the Bond series to be titled differently from the name of the film.
Starting slowly, The Spy Who Loved Me title theme » becomes a big, powerful love ballad with its catchy chorus and memorable lyrics. With it's laid back attitude, romantic overtones and sweeping charm, Carly Simon certainly puts in a star turn, even managing to pull off using the films title in the lyrics. Nominated for the Academy Award for Best Song, there is no doubt why this is a fan favourite.
'Nobody Does It Better' proved to be a success outside of the title as well, with the single reaching number 7 in the UK, narrowly missing out on the top spot in the US by peaking at number two.
Lyrics
Nobody does it better. Makes me feel sad for the rest. Nobody does it, half as good as you. Baby, you're the best. I wasn't looking, but somehow you found me, I tried to hide from your love light, but like heaven above, me the spy who loved me is keepin' all my secrets safe tonight.
And nobody does it better. Though sometimes I wish someone could. Nobody does it quite the way you do, why'd you have to be so good?
The way that you hold me, whenever you hold me, there's some kind of magic inside you, that keeps me from runnin', but just keep it comin'. How'd you learn to do the things you do?
And nobody does it better. Makes me feel sad for the rest. Nobody does it half as good as you. Baby, baby, (darlin',) you're the best.
[Baby you're the best. Baby you're the best. Baby you're the best. Darlin' you're the best. Darlin' you're the best. Baby you're the best. Baby you're the best.]
