Visuals

Once again in contrast to the previous flames and skulls of Live And Let Die, The Man With The Golden Gun has a much darker palette with more watery, subtler images. The naked silhouette girls are present once again, this time dancing in front of red sparks, along with seductive looks from women under watery surfaces and suggestive poses. There is a strong oriental feel to the titles to tie-in with the locations used in the film, although at times feels uninspired and languishing.

Theme

After not being available for Live And Let Die, John Barry returns for The Man With The Golden Gun title theme ». Admitted by Barry himself, this is the worst of the Bond themes up to this point. While initially Elton John, Cat Stevens, Alice Cooper and even a possible return of Shirley Bassey were all considered for the title theme, this eventually fell to be sung by Scottish singer Lulu.

The result sadly, is lyrics that are ridiculous, full of double entendres and sexual innuendo. Lulu gives a poppy, shrill, harsh performance and coupled with a blaring instrumental, this certainly is one title theme to skip over. The theme lacks substance and is full of cheesy dialogue, and as much as Lulu seems to be enjoying herself and putting her all into the song, it's just not enough to elevate it from the unloved pile.

Similarly The Man With The Golden Gun failed to score with listeners, not charting at all on either the UK or US charts, the first time a Bond theme would do so.

Lyrics

He has a powerful weapon, he charges a million a shot. An assassin that's second to none, the man with the golden gun.

Lurking in some darkened doorway, or crouched on a rooftop somewhere, in the next room, or this very one, the man with the golden gun.

Love is required, whenever he's hired, it comes just before the kill. No one can catch him, no hitman can match him, for his million dollar skill.

One golden shot means another poor victim, has come to a glittering end. For a price he'll erase anyone, the man with the golden gun.

His eye may be on you or me. Who will he bang? We shall see.

Love is required whenever he's hired, it comes just before the kill. No one can catch him, no hitman can match him, for his million dollar skill.

One golden shot means another poor victim, has come to a glittering end. If you want to get rid of someone the man with the golden gun will get it done. He'll shoot anyone, with his golden gun. §
