For Your Eyes Only sees Maurice Binder returns once again to do his tenth Bond title sequence. There are the usual features here once again. We have a very watery theme to reflect parts of the film, there are the customary naked female silhouettes that are running and swimming about, and of course the now customary appearance of Roger Moore as Bond.
What sets this sequence apart from all the other ones in the Moore era though, is the appearance of the title singer herself. Sheena Easton appears as the main focus throughout the whole sequence, appearing in plenty of soft close-ups and sensual poses. In the dawn of the music video, this seems very apt, and actually makes the sequence more interesting than it otherwise would have been. She even decides to get into the spirit of a Bond theme by being naked the whole time.
Theme
Bill Conti steps into the scene to do the score on For Your Eyes Only. Initially thinking about either Blondie or Dusty Springfield to do the song, United Artists in the end suggested Scottish singer Sheena Easton to take the role.
The Academy Award nominated For Your Eyes Only title theme » starts with a dramatic and sweeping instrumental section, before easing into the romantic overtones of Easton's smooth vocals. It's clear this is the start of the Eighties with the synthesized instrumentation, and sweeping lyrics. However there are pleasant musical cues, a wistful feel and general romantic atmosphere, so it's not all bad, and the song does fit to the films title.
The song faired quite well in charts across the world, reaching number 8 in the UK, getting to number 4 in the US, but fairing much better in Norway and the Netherlands reaching that coveted number one spot.
