John Barry returns to do the Moonraker soundtrack » after the relatively poor The Spy Who Loved Me soundtrack. While Barry comes up with the goods once more, sadly this soundtrack is one of the shortest out of the series. There are many explanations for this, but since it was a French-British production, the most logical reason is that the original master tapes must still be in French control or stored in some archive or vault.
The soundtrack itself is a departure from Barry's usual style of brass, trumpets and horns but here we have a more elegant, slick and yet haunting score. While the title theme sung once again by Shirley Bassey never achieved the same success as 'Goldfinger', it still blends in seamlessly with the style of the film and adds an exotic romantic undertone. Sadly Moonraker marks the last time the now timeless '007' theme is heard when it is played in 'Bond Arrives In Rio/Boat Chase'.
The suspense and tension filled tracks are here once again with the excellent 'Bond Smells A Rat' and the slowly building haunting 'Centrifuge And Corrinne Put Down'. Action fans are not disappointed with 'Cable Car and Snake Fight' where Barry once again makes his mark. The real highlights of the Moonraker soundtrack are in the final songs. 'Bond Lured To Pyramid' has a romantic, exotic mystery bringing out the beauty of Bond surroundings. 'Flight Into Space' and 'Space Laser Battle' really stir the emotions as the cold, dark reality of space is portrayed excellently. After the previous stirring tracks, the up-beat remix of the Moonraker title theme is quite welcome here concluding the soundtrack on a happy note.

The following tracks are from the remastered 2003 release. While you may prefer to listen to the tracks as they are presented, below is a list of the tracks arranged in the rough order they appear in the film. This is only approximate however, since there are a number of tracks which contain multiple cues within them, meaning that some cues are in the wrong order. Consequently its very much personal preference as to what order you listen to these tracks.
For a more advanced method, an alternative would be to chop up some of the tracks, allowing the cues to be repositioned and put in their proper order. Instructions on how to do this can be found on this fan site ». §
