Similar to Bond’s ticker tape watch, the KGB needed a way to keep in contact with their agents. Whilst in bed with her lover Sergei Barsov, KGB agent Major Anya Amasova’s music box starts to play a tune. After Anya lifts the lid a message is played telling her to report to HQ immediately and to verify she knows her instructions. She responds to the message using her codename, Agent XXX.

Like Major Anya Amasova’s KGB Music box Radio, MI6 had to have a way they could contact their agents away on missions should the need arise. Bond’s watch provides this means. Whilst ‘on a mission’ in Austria Bond receives orders from HQ to report immediately as the watch prints out a ticker-tape message.

This normal looking ski pole featured a hidden gun. As one of the KGB assassins chases Bond down a mountain firing at him, Bond takes action. He twists the top of the pole to reveal a trigger. Bond turns around and shoots one of his attackers, Sergei Barsov, Anya’s lover. Bond then stylishly flips himself over a bump to face the right way again.

Bond takes out a cigarette case and lighter from his pocket that converts into a microfilm viewer whilst he is on the boat to Cairo with Anya. He examines the microfilm without her knowing and finds that the necessary information has been removed.

This perfectly innocent looking cigarette catches Bond off guard. Just as things are getting interesting Anya pulls out a cigarette. Ever the gentleman, Bond reaches for his lighter, but when he looks back at Anya she blows a couple of times on the cigarette sending a plume of sleeping gas in Bond’s face, knocking him out. When Bond regains consciousness in the morning Anya has disappeared, along with the microfilm.

In The Spy Who Loved Me, MI6’s Egyptian base is hidden within an Egyptian pyramid. Bond and Anya Amasova see Q demonstrating the latest gadgets. These included an Egyptian smoking pipe that doubled as a machine gun and a tea tray that “floated” along a track and an ejector seat. Bond and Anya get a surprise as they walk past a camel saddle where a large metal spike shoots up leaving Bond to make the witticism “That’ll bring tears to your eyes!”. However none of these gadgets are actually used in the film.
