location information
The first neoclassical building in the city, the Brandenburg Gate was constructed in 1791. The gates architecture uses a Greek style similar to that found around the Acropolis in Athens. Above the gate is the Quadriga, consisting of the goddess of peace, driving a four-horse chariot in triumph, with the whole gate acting as a sign of peace.
The gate has taken on a number of roles throughout history. During the time of the Nazis, the gate symbolized power and victory, where as in the 1960's the gate was closed when the Berlin Wall was built and become a symbol of the division between the city. Once the Berlin Wall fell in 1989, the gate once again stood for peace and the unification of Berlin.
