Starred In Die Another Day (2002)

film information

Sir Gustav Graves played by Toby Stephens is the third villain of Die Another Day. Graves first makes his appearance when he parachutes from a plane to land outside Buckingham Palace.

Bond is introduced to Graves and Miranda Frost by Verity when he visits a London fencing club. After an exciting fencing fight, Graves admits defeat and invites Bond to Iceland to see his Icarus demonstration.

Giving his demonstration at the ice palace in Iceland, Graves appears in a number of scenes. After gaining access to Graves’ alleged diamond mine, and with the help of Giacinta 'Jinx' Johnson, Bond discovers that Gustav Graves is in fact Colonel Moon. Graves gives Bond another shock when Bond confronts him about his deception. He finds out that Miranda Frost is actually working alongside Graves, and she had emptied his gun when they slept together the night before. After escaping, Bond becomes involved in the car chase with Zao while Graves continues his plans and boards the Antonov.

Bond and Jinx pursue Graves aboard the Antonov, where Jinx takes care of Miranda whilst Bond deals with Graves. The billionaire has the upper hand throughout most of the struggle with Bond, courtesy of Graves’ Electrical Suit. After Graves straps on a parachute, Bond pulls the rip cord sending Graves flying backwards only managing to hang on to the side of the plane. Bond then uses Graves' own electrical suit to send him flying to his death into one of the planes engines.

character information

The official story behind Gustav Graves is that he was an orphan working in the diamond mines in Argentina. From there he discovered a large amount of diamonds in Iceland where he has made his fortune. In reality, Gustav Graves has no past other than that of his true identity Colonel Moon. He makes his money using his fake diamond mine as a front for laundering African conflict diamonds. With interests in ecology and a lover of fencing, Graves hates to lose. Developer of the Icarus space program to end the worlds poverty, the main purpose of the Icarus Satellite is to meet Graves’ dream - the invasion of South Korea.

After Graves emerges from the gene replacement therapy he is even more committed and motivated to achieve his goals - to make Korea whole again. He mentions that he will win at any cost; this is clear throughout the film, like the fencing match with Bond and in the final confrontation aboard the Antonov. Graves is willing to use any means at his disposal, including using Miranda to get what he also desires - revenge on Bond. Graves is also confident in his abilities and it is this that causes his downfall. He becomes too over-confident when he think he has the upper hand over Bond, and like many a villain, Bond uses this moment to turn the tables. §
