Profile
During the pre-title sequence whilst Colonel Tan-Sun Moon is talking to Bond, it is Zao who makes Moon aware of Bond's true identity, tipped off by information from Miranda Frost.
When Bond detonates the bomb inside the diamond case, Zao's face gets cut to pieces with diamonds. Many months later when Bond is released he realises he is being traded for Zao and deems to get his revenge.
Zao later appears in the film when Bond visits Cuba at the gene therapy clinic. He confronts Zao in the middle of his gene therapy treatment, but Zao manages to escape from both Bond and Giacinta 'Jinx' Johnson.
Zao later re-appears when Bond visits the ice palace. He meets his former boss in the guise of Sir Gustav Graves for the first time after the transformation, and likewise Graves meets a 'blank slate' Zao interrupted in the gene therapy treatment. Bond and Zao then engage in a car chase across the frozen lakes of Iceland, Bond in his Aston Martin V12 Vanquish and Zao in the Jaguar XKR.
For most of the chase it appears that there isn't a winner, as both cars are equally matched. However when Zao thinks he has the upper hand at the end of the chase, Bond's re-camouflages the car leaving Zao crashing through an ice barrier into the icy water below. Bond drives past shooting a crystal chandelier from the ceiling that drops straight on top of Zao in the water below.
About
Colonel Moon's right-hand man, Zao appears to have a close relationship with his boss. While Bond is held captive Zao kills a number of Chinese agents and people are lead to believe Bond is to blame. After the diamond explosion Graves pays for Zao to undergo the same gene therapy treatment, but when Bond stops the procedure halfway through this creates a truly frightening villain.
With a pale white complexion, unreachable-looking blue eyes, veins and diamonds embedded in his face and body, Zao truly is one of the most scariest looking villains in the series. With a mean, let understated personality, Zao like Gustav Graves falls victim to his over-confidence that leads to his death. §
