After connecting some bank notes associated with Craig Mitchell at his apartment, and some introduced into the funds of Le Chiffre, Bond is sent to Port-au-Prince in Haiti to investigate possible connections with Edmund Slate.
As Bond enters room 325 at the Hotel Dessalines, Slate comes at Bond from another room with a knife. The pair endure a rather nasty brawl, before Bond stabs Slate in the neck. Bond waits until Slate is dead, then takes his briefcase and walks out.

As Bond shortly finds out when he opens Slate's briefcase in front of Camille Montes, Slate had been hired by Dominic Greene to kill her under the guise of obtaining some secret documents. Since he doesn't live very long, little else is learnt about the character §
