General Georgi Koskov played by Jeroen Krabbe is the first villain of The Living Daylights. After the pre-title sequence, James Bond is sent to Bratislava to assist Saunders in Koskov’s defection.
After a successful defection, Bond meets up with Koskov, M, Minister of Defence and various other dignitaries at the Blayden safe house. Koskov convinces M that General Leonid Pushkin is a dangerous threat - the man behind the assassination of British agents and re-launch of SMERSH. Koskov is ‘kidnapped’ by Necros shortly afterwards, who in reality rescues him after a successful mission of misinforming British Intelligence.
Bond reluctantly follows M’s orders to assassinate Pushkin, but later in the film confronts Pushkin to get some answers distrusting the information provided by Koskov. Bond approaches Kara Milovy, girlfriend to Koskov, to find out as much information as he can posing as Koskov’s friend. Koskov convinces the naïve Kara that Bond is a KGB agent, consequently leading her to drug Bond’s Vodka Martini. After arriving in Afghanistan Koskov double-crosses Kara locking both her and Bond in a prison cell. They manage to escape and with the help of Kamran Shah and the local resistance dispose of the drugs Koskov and Brad Whitaker were planning to sell in America.
At the end of the film Koskov emerges once more at Whitakers apartment where he pretends that Whitaker has held him hostage for weeks. Pushkin happily remarks “Put him on the next plane to Moscow!" causing much gratitude from Koskov, before Pushkin tells him it’s in the diplomatic bag.

General Georgi Koskov is a high-ranking Soviet mastermind who schemes with Brad Whitaker in a plan to make them very wealthy. Whitaker uses the payment of an arms deal with the Russians to buy a large amount of raw opium to be sold in America, thus turning a huge profit in days, while still being able to provide the Russians with their arms. However when Pushkin declares he wants the money back, Koskov and Whitaker re-launch SMERSH, an old Soviet anti-espionage plan to assassinate British agents, thus forcing the assassination of Koskov and the recommencement of the opium-smuggling operation.
Charming but ruthless Koskov even sets his own girlfriend Kara, to be killed by telling her to shoot blanks at him to make his defection look real. Asking for Bond personally to protect him, Koskov knows Bond is the best and that Kara will be killed. The cringe-worthy signs of affection Koskov shows doesn’t make Koskov that convincing, especially at the end of the film when he tries to convince Pushkin about his ‘hostage experience’ unsuccessfully. §
