Tatiana Romanova is introduced quite early on in From Russia With Love and she is seen mostly throughout the film. M receives information that she is willing to defect if Bond is willing to go out and meet her and escort her back to England, with a new Soviet LEKTOR decoding machine.
Unknown to Tatiana, or Bond at this stage, this is a plan by SPECTRE to kill Bond and to steal the LEKTOR.
007 meets Tatiana in his hotel for the first time, where unknown to both of them their antics are secretly being filmed. Tatiana provides Bond and Kerim Bey with a map of the Russian Consulate. She also provides information to M and the CIA, through Bond about the LEKTOR to validate its identity.
Bond and Tatiana board the Orient Express to head home to England. However Bond soon realises SPECTRE's plan when he meets Red Grant. After a rather vicious fight Bond manages to kill Grant and escape with Tatiana, still semi-conscious after being drugged by Grant.
Bond and Tatiana meet further resistance, first by a SPECTRE helicopter and then by a series of boats, which Bond and Tatiana manage to escape from. Later in Venice Rosa Klebb returns as SPECTRE's last chance to complete its mission. The film ends where Bond and Tatiana take a romantic gondola ride into the distance.
About
A corporal in Soviet Army Intelligence, Tatiana Romanova is assigned to work in the Soviet Embassy in Istanbul. Originally intended to be a ballerina, she had to drop out, as she was just one inch too high to qualify. She has a number of friends and is very popular although has had only 3 lovers.
She likes the look of Bond and when she sees him face-to-face she comments, "You're even nicer than your photograph", to which 007 replies "You're the most beautiful girl I have ever seen".
Tatiana doesn't know that she is a pawn in SPECTRE's game, but believes that she is on an important mission for her country. As per her orders from Rosa Klebb, she does anything Bond says throughout the film. However at the end of the film she is torn between 007 and Klebb when she appears dressed as a cleaning lady who tries to steal the LEKTOR. She either follows her orders to shoot Bond, or shoots Klebb to help him. Tatiana makes the right choice.
Trivia
Holding the title of Miss Rome, Daniela Bianchi was quite new at acting when she played the attractive Russian corporal. She retired from acting a couple of years later making her autograph the hardest to get out of all the Bond Girls. §
