Barbara Bach playing Major Anya Amasova

Born in Queens, New York, USA on 27th August 1947

Starred In The Spy Who Loved Me (1977)

film information

Major Anya Amasova played by Barbara Bach is the main Bond Girl of The Spy Who Loved Me. While M recalls Bond from his mission, M's opposite number in the KGB, General Gogol, is doing the same for Agent XXX, aka Major Amasova.

Anya meets Bond during the show at the Pyramids, but they formally introduce each other at Max Kalbas club where they meet to bid for the microfilm.

For most of the film Bond and Anya have the same mission objectives and try to achieve the same goals. Anya sometimes leads, sometimes follows Bond. They travel from Kalbas club to Egyptian ruins and ride a boat to Cairo. After meeting with M and General Gogol at the MI6 Egyptian HQ, Anya and Bond agree to actually work together.

After travelling to Sardinia, Anya accompanies Bond to meet Stromberg posing as his wife. However after Anya finds out that 007 killed her lover, another Russian agent, she tells Bond that revenge will be hers.

Bond rescues Anya from Atlantis after being taken by Stromberg when Captain Carters submarine is captured by the Liparus. As the mission reaches its end, Bond manages to convince Anya not to kill him but to join him in bed instead.

character information

Major Anya Amasova is an excellent character. Agent XXX, the KGB's best agent provides a perfect match for 007 in every sense. Throughout the film Anya and Bond play a game of trying to outsmart each other. Anya is equally as intelligent as 007, and in some scenes even smarter.

The introduction of Major Anya Amasova into The Spy Who Loved Me launched a new style of Bond Girl. Anya was by no means dependent on Bond as she was totally independent. Unlike some previous Bond Girls, Anya was an extremely useful ally to Bond, who without her assistance 007 probably would not of been able to complete his mission.

Anya uniquely provides an interesting twist when she finds out 007 is the killer of her lover, Russian agent Sergei Barsov. Anya tells Bond that once the mission is complete she will take her revenge by killing him. As per her warning Anya does come close to killing Bond at the end of the film, but Bond manages to convince her otherwise. §
