Profile
In Goldeneye, Tanner gives Bond a short informal briefing about the state of play with the mission and the missing Tiger helicopter. He also provides his opinion on the Goldeneye satellite after seeing its results on the screen in real-time.
After MI6 relocates to its headquarters in Scotland in The World Is Not Enough, Tanner gives a briefing to all the 00 agents about Elektra King's lapel transmitter. It is also left to Tanner to tell Bond the bad news about him being excluded from assignment because of his injury. He appears later in the film when Elektra tells M to come and protect her, and then later at the end of the film when Q is present with M and Miss Moneypenny whilst they are searching for Bond and Dr Christmas Jones.
About
The character of Bill Tanner is played by the third actor, and is again a completely different character than before. This incarnation is closer to that described by Ian Fleming; Tanner being M's most trusted member of staff, and close friend of Bond. He slips up with M in Goldeneye when he gives Bond the briefing about the Tiger, telling him it's a shame the 'evil queen of numbers' doesn't let him investigate. Obviously this doesn't go down well with M who is standing right behind him, and Tanner gets put in his place quite quickly. §
