Sheriff J.W Pepper (Clifton James)
Sheriff J.W Pepper played by Clifton James
Born in New York, USA on 29th May 1921
Starred In Live And Let Die (1973) and The Man With The Golden Gun (1974)
As the boat chase progresses in Live And Let Die, Adam is sent to drive ahead and stop Bond by any means necessary. As Adam speeds down a local road Sheriff J.W Pepper makes pursuit to catch the speeding felon. Just when he starts to arrest Adam, Bond speeds along in his Glastron speedboat and flies over a small strip of land landing in the water on the opposite side. Sheriff J.W is amazed at the sight, Bond continues on, Adam escapes, and one of the boats pursing Bond ends up on top of the Sheriff's car.
In The Man With The Golden Gun the Sheriff is on holiday with his wife in Thailand. He catches a glimpse of Bond who he recognises, but dismisses the thought and continues on. Later he soon finds himself in the middle of a car chase with Bond in the pursuit of Francisco Scaramanga, where he exclaims "Your that secret agent! That English secret agent from England!" At the end of the chase, the pursuing local authorities arrest Sheriff J.W when they arrive at Scaramanga's hideout.
A cringingly amusing character, Sheriff J.W Pepper is a narrow-minded police officer that seems to be stuck in the past. This way down-to-earth lawman vows to get his man when Bond causes destruction to the Sheriff's car. He exasperatedly yells at his colleagues to get on the case and bring every man they have to put a stop to Bonds antics. The Sheriff gets increasingly frustrated at his failures and relishes the moment when he finally catches Bond, only to be 'educated' by his boss.
The character only gets worse in The Man With Golden Gun. For an off-duty policeman the Sheriff's behaviour is hardly decent – he shouts, spits, slobbers and generally causes his own destruction! §
